Uljanik Floats Out Scenic Eclipse
Croatian shipbuilder Uljanik Shipyard said it has floated out a new polar discovery passenger ship for the Scenic group, on January 31, 2018. The new 168-meter, 237-passenger luxury vessel, Scenic Eclipse, features Polar Class 6 COLD DI notation. It is the first vessel launched this year at Uljanik. Scenic Eclipse is expected to launch in summer 2018.

Wärtsilä Inks 25 Maintenance Deal with Maersk Drilling
Wärtsilä said it has entered a cooperation with drilling contractor Maersk Drilling to create a 25-year thruster maintenance strategy for Maersk’s three semisubmersible rigs and four drillships. The parties have already completed the strategy work on the D-rigs and commenced the strategy work related to V-Drillships. By reducing the thruster exchange time, the deep-sea rigs and drillships will spend less time in sheltered waters for thruster maintenance, Wärtsilä said.

Fincantieri Lays Keel for Italy’s New Amphibious Unit
A keel laying ceremony of the multipurpose amphibious unit (LHD or Landing Helicopter Dock) was held Tuesday at Fincantieri’s shipyard in Castellammare di Stabia, Italy, marking the beginning of the slipway works of the unit. 835 Ships Sold to Scrap Yards in 2017
More than 800 large oceangoing commercial vessels were sold to the scrap yards in 2017, according to the latest data from the NGO Shipbreaking Platform. Of the 835 ships sold to scrap yards, 543 vessels – or 80.3 percent of total tonnage dismantled globally – were broken down on the beaches of Bangladesh, India and Pakistan. However, the number of vessels and total GT scrapped in the tree nations decreased compared to 2016.
