Hydrex's Doubler Plates Keep Ships Sailing
Underwater repair specialist Hydrex says when hull damage leads to the classification society to only allow temporary repair, there is a practical solution that allows ships to continue operations until a permanent repair can be scheduled. Recently called upon to inspect damage to the stern thruster area of a 195m ro-ro ship during a scheduled stop in Antwerp, the Hydrex investigation revealed a large crack in the welding seam on the edge between the hull plating and the thruster tunnel.

Ukraine Grain Exports Total 35.4 mln T in 207/18
Ukraine's grain exports have reached 35.4 million tonnes since the season began in July, down from 38.7 million tonnes at the same point last season, the agriculture ministry said on Wednesday.So far in the 2017/18 season, which runs from July to June, Ukraine has exported 15.7 million tonnes of wheat, 15.3 million tonnes of maize and 4.19 million tonnes of barley, the ministry said in a statement.Ukraine said it harvested 61.3 million tonnes of grain in calendar year 2017, down from a record 66

Baltic Index Drops
The Baltic Exchange's main sea freight index, tracking rates for ships carrying dry bulk commodities, fell on Wednesday, hurt by weak demand for capesize vessels. The overall index, which factors in rates for capesize, panamax and supramax shipping vessels, was down 65 points, or 4.4 percent, at 1,403 points, registering its highest percentage fall since Jan. 17. The capesize index lost 195 points, or 7.5 percent, at 2,407 points.
Workboats: Three Damen Stan Tugs for Corpetrolsa Group
Damen Shipyards Group signed a contract with Corpetrolsa Group of Guayaquil, Ecuador, for the supply of three tugs; one Stan Tug 1205 and two Stan Tugs 1606. The tugs will be operated by Corpetrolsa subsidiary DLEN S.A. to support its bunkering operation. Corpetrolsa Group operates its own fleet of tankers in the 2,000 to 7,000 DWT range and the three new tugs will be used to assist them in the Ecuadorean ports of Esmeraldas and La Libertad.
