Pirates Release Tanker and Crew in Gulf of Guinea
Product tanker MT Barrett has been released and all crew are safe following a six-day piracy incident in the Gulf of Guinea, U.K. based Union Maritime has confirmed. Union Maritime said it lost communications with its 11,999-dwt product tanker while the vessel was at anchor off Benin, West Africa on the morning of January 10, after which the company immediately implemented its emergency response plan and alerted regional maritime authorities and other vessels.
MISHA to Install DESMI BWMS Fleet-wide
Danish firm DESMI Ocean Guard A/S said it has finalized a contract to supply CompactClean ballast water management systems (BWMS) to the entire fleet of Turkish ship owner MISHA Shipping. The contract includes delivery of 10 CompactClean BWMS in sizes from 340 to 750 m3/h, with the first system to be delivered later in 2018 for the m/v Mohican currently under construction. MISHA Shipping is a privately held company with both shipping and shipyard activities.

Coast Guard Helo Crew Hoists Men Stranded in Oregon
A U.S. Coast Guard aircrew rescued three men after they became stranded by the rising tide at Indian Beach, Wednesday. The helicopter crew from Sector Columbia River safely hoisted the men and transported them to Canon Beach Fire Department personnel waiting on shore. Sector watchstanders received a report from Seaside 911 dispatchers with a request for assistance at 12:20 p.m. after the three men, who were fishing in tide pools, became stranded due to high tide.
Coast Guard Medevacs Tanker Crewman with Severed Finger
A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter crew medevaced a man Wednesday afternoon from the 392-foot Maltese-flagged tank ship Emek-S, approximately 28 nautical miles southwest of Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico. Coast Guard watchstanders in Sector San Juan received a call from the captain of the Emek-S at 3:08 p.m. stating that a crewmember, who was a Turkish citizen, had lost part of his left hand's middle finger two hours earlier.
OSD Rolls Out New Harbor Tug Design
Offshore Ship Designers (OSD) has launched a new tug design as part of its expanding portfolio of fuel-efficient vessels. The 390 gt Azistern 2870 harbor tug has a hard chine hull form which optimizes energy-saving during transit and results in a very low wash. It has a bollard pull of 70 metric tons and a maximum speed of 12 knots. Providing accommodation for six persons, it has an overall length of 28.3 m, and a breadth of 11.5 m.
One Person Missing After Boat Capsized
The U.S. Coast Guard is searching for one person who ended up in the Pungo River near Hobucken, N.C. after a boat capsized. The 21-foot TowBoatUS vessel was towing a 47-foot recreational boat when the lead vessel capsized near the river entrance Thursday morning. Officials say and they are now searching the water for a 45-year-old TowBoatUS captain reported to be wearing coveralls, rubber boots and a lifejacket.

Langh Tech Debuts New Water Treatment Systems
Langh Tech’s new generation of water treatment systems has been launched with upgraded membrane technology to increase water cleaning capacity. In 2017, Langh Tech launched a second generation of water treatment systems based on a new type of membrane filter elements. With the new elements, Langh Tech said a 50 percent increase in water cleaning capacity can be reached compared to the previous elements, without increasing the size of the water treatment units.
