Slowed by industry headwinds and challenges that included major customer Hanjin declaring bankruptcy, the Port of Long Beach said it moved almost 6.8 million containers in 2016, its fifth best year ever. Overall cargo declined 5.8 percent in 2016 compared to 2015, as the Port was impacted by new ocean carrier alliances and the August bankruptcy of Hanjin Shipping, a South Korean company and former majority stakeholder at the 381-acre Pier T container terminal — Long Beach’s largest.
US Shifts LNG Exports to Asia as Arb Opens Ip
The biggest divergence between U.S. and Asian gas prices in a year has created an opportunity for tankers delivering liquefied natural gas, with most departures from a key Louisiana terminal in the last month-and-a-half heading toward East Asia, shipping data released on Wednesday show. The facility, Sabine Pass, owned by Cheniere Energy Inc, opened last year as the first LNG export terminal in the U.S. Lower 48 states. LPG Carrier Rescues Sailor off Nicaragua
A LPG carrier operated by NYK, Linden Pride, rescued a seafarer from a boat in distress 100 nautical miles off the coast of Nicaragua. While Linden Pride was sailing from Balboa, Panama, to Sendai, Japan on December 4, the ship came upon a disabled boat with one survivor requesting assistance, and immediately initiated the rescue. The rescued sailor was in good health and disembarked from Linden Pride off the coast of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, on December 8 as directed by the U.S. Coast Guard.
