Suez Canal Orders Two Cutter Suction Dredgers
The Egyptian Suez Canal Authority (SCA) has placed an order for two custom-built 29,190kW heavy-duty rock cutter suction dredgers (CSDs). The vessels will have an overall length of 147.4 meters and provide a maximum dredging depth of 35 meters. In addition, they will offer accommodation facilities for 73 people. Equipped with one submerged – and two inboard – dredge pumps, the installed cutter power will be 4,800kW.
Fincantieri Building Second Italian Navy Patrol Ship
A steel cutting ceremony for Italy’s next Multipurpose Offshore Patrol Ship (PPA) took place at Fincantieri’s shipyard in Riva Trigoso (Genova), officially marking the beginning of construction works on the second unit. The unit will be delivered in 2022 and it is part of the renewal plan of the surface operational lines of the Italian Navy vessels, approved by the Government and Parliament and started in May 2015. The steel cutting ceremony of the first PPA took place in February 2017.

Damen Shipyards Group said it has delivered to Murjan Al-Sharq Marine Services a new Multi Cat 1908 fitted with a Damen DOP Submersible Dredge Pump 250 for added shallow-water dredging capacity. Murjan Al-Sharq Marine Services is based in Saudi Arabia. The company provides marine construction and maintenance, dredging, diving and subsea services. Bureau Veritas Joins Maritime Drones Project
The potential for drones to be used for inspections is not new, notes Bureau Veritas, but to date trials have not focused on specific survey requirements for ship structures in enclosed spaces; the RECOMMS project will do just that. Bureau Veritas has joined RECOMMS (Remote Evaluation of Coatings / Corrosion on Offshore Machinery and Marine Structures / Ships), a joint investment project (JIP), to develop drones with the capability to inspect steel structures in enclosed spaces.
