Yara Birkeland Model Commences Testing
A six meter long, 2.4 ton model of the final design of the autonomous and fully electric container vessel Yara Birkeland was revealed as testing commenced at SINTEF Ocean’s 80 meter test tank facility in Trondheim, September 28, 2017. It was also revealed that ENOVA, a Norwegian government enterprise responsible for promotion of environmentally friendly production and consumption of energy will support the project with a NOK 133 million ($16.7 million) financial contribution.
Chinese Demand Ensures Asian LNG Rally Has Legs
Unexpectedly strong demand from China, along with rising oil and coal prices, should keep Asian liquefied natural gas (LNG) spot levels buoyant this winter. Despite rising supplies from new plants, spot prices have risen by 55 percent from their 2017 lows to $8.40 per million British thermal units (mmBtu) as Asian buyers also refilled summer stocks. With the peak demand October-March winter gas season almost underway, further price gains are expected.

LR Approves HMD Cargo Handling System for LNG Bunker Vessel
Hyundai Mipo Dockyard (HMD) has received approval in principle (AiP) from Lloyd’s Register (LR) for a cargo handling system design for a 6,600 m³ LNG bunkering vessel. HMD and the Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) Corporate Research Center jointly developed the cargo handling system design based on their extensive experience of building gas carriers. HMD chose to develop the LNG bunkering vessel design because of the potential for growth in the LNG-fuelled ship sector.
Meyer Turku Floats Out New Mein Schiff 1
Shipbuilder Meyer Turku said it has floated out the new Mein Schiff 1 cruise ship for owner TUI Cruises. The vessel will undergo further interior outfitting before delivery in spring 2018. New Mein Schiff 1 is an evolution of the Mein Schiff 6 delivered earlier this year. She will be 20 meters longer (315 m) than her predecessor, which allowed for substantial redesign and further improvement of the interior spaces.

Rolls-Royce is marking another milestone on the journey toward the completion of Britain’s new polar research vessel the RRS Sir David Attenborough being built by Merseyside shipyard Cammell Laird. The last of the vessel’s Bergen B33:45 engines/gensets have been craned into the ship’s hull at Cammell Laird ready to be connected to the RRS Sir David Attenborough’s Rolls-Royce propulsion system. The nine cylinder engines are carefully installed in three separate pieces.
