Strong Capesize Rates Push Baltic Index Higher
The Baltic Exchange's main sea freight index, tracking rates for ships carrying dry bulk commodities, rose on Thursday as rates for capesize vessels moved higher. The overall index, which factors in rates for capesize, panamax, supramax and handysize shipping vessels, was up 40 points, or 3.31 percent, at 1,247 points - highest since April 19. The capesize index climbed 218 points, or 9.38 percent, to 2,542 points, the highest since late March.
Project to Build World’s Biggest Sailing Cargo Ship
Lloyd's Register (LR) has joined the Quadriga sustainable shipping project – an initiative from Hamburg-based Sailing Cargo, which aims to build the world’s biggest sailing cargo ship. The project outlines a plan to build a 170-meter car carrier, capable of carrying between 1,700 and 2,000 cars, which will be equipped with four DynaRig masts and will operate on hybrid propulsion with sails and diesel-electric engines, and an optional battery system for peak loads.
