Hapag-Lloyd, Inmarsat Ink Fleet Xpress Deal
Global mobile satellite communications services provider Inmarsat has signed a five-year contract with Hapag-Lloyd to migrate all ships directly managed by the shipping line to services enabled for Fleet Xpress. Hapag-Lloyd, the sixth largest container shipping operator in the world by Twenty Foot Equivalent Unit (TEU) capacity, will transition all existing ships that it manages in-house from Inmarsat FleetBroadband services to Fleet Xpress.
New Nautican Facility Readies First Shipment
The new Nautican Research and Development manufacturing and integration facility in Summerside, Prince Edward Island, opened in December 2016 with the support of Babcock Canada and the provincial government. First LNG-fueled Aframax Tankers Ordered
Hyundai Heavy Industries’ shipbuilding affiliate Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries (HSHI) said it recently won a $240 million order to build four 114,000 DWT Ice-Class IA aframax tankers from Sovcomflot, the Russia’s state-owned shipping company. The vessels are said to be the world’s first LNG-fueled aframax tankers, and will measure 250 meters in length, 44 meters in width and 21 meters in height. They are scheduled to be delivered from the third quarter of 2018 and to be chartered to Shell.
Robust Capesize Vessel Rates Buoy Baltic Index
The Baltic Exchange's main sea freight index, tracking rates for ships carrying dry bulk commodities, rose for the 14th straight session on Monday as capesize rates strengthened. The overall index, which also factors in rates for panamax, supramax and handysize shipping vessels, climbed 9 points, or 0.75 percent, to end at 1,205 points, its highest since Nov. 23. However, the index had gained at least 1 percent in the previous 13 sessions.
