Virginia Institute of Marine Science Orders Research Vessel
Virginia Institute of Marine Science of Gloucester Point, Va. awarded a contract to Meridien Maritime Reparation of Matane, Quebec to construct a 93-foot research vessel. JMS Naval Architects of Mystic, Conn. designed the research vessel to replace VIMS’s current vessel, the R/V Bay Eagle. The primary mission of the Institute’s fleet is to provide inshore and offshore work platforms for the support of fisheries related oceanographic research projects.
New Tug Delivered to Vane Brothers
Marine transportation provider Vane Brothers has taken delivery of the newly built tugboat Delaware, the fourth of eight vessels in Vane’s Elizabeth Anne Class of 4,200-horsepower tugs contracted through St. Johns Ship Building in Palatka, Fla. Designed by Frank Basile, P.E., of Entech Designs, LLC, the Delaware is a steel-hulled, model bow tug measuring 100 feet long with a 34-foot beam and 13-foot draught.

Parrott Takes over as CEO of Foss Maritime
John Parrott assumed the role of President and CEO of Foss Maritime on January 1, 2017, after completing a four-month transition announced last July. Parrott joined Foss in January 2016 as Chief Operating Officer; in August 2016 he assumed the role of President from retiring President and CEO Paul Stevens. Parrott completed a "listening tour" in early 2016, which included visiting Foss employees at work throughout the company.
Ferus Smit Launches Arklow Castle
Shipbuilder Ferus Smit said it has launched M.V. Arklow Castle at its Westerbroek yard in the Netherlands. Arklow Castle (Nb. 426) is the third cargo vessel in a series of 10 that will be delivered to Irish owner Arklow Shipping. With a maximized hold volume of 220,000 cft and a carrying capacity over 5,000 deadweight tons, it still falls under the 3,000 gross tons limit. Arklow Castle has one single hold and an 1A iceclass notation.
