Rederij Doeksen Plans Freight Catamaran Conversion
Rederij Doeksen has contracted Damen Shiprepair Harlingen to carry out the conversion of its 47.15-meter-long freight catamaran, Noord-Nederland. The conversion work will provide Rederij Doeksen with increased capacity to manage seasonal fluctuations in freight demands. The repair yard has already begun preparations for the conversion process. A major part of their work will be lengthening the vessel’s hull by about 20 meters.
Danish Maritime Authority to Publish 2 Years of AIS Data

Long Beach Volumes Dip on Hanjin Fallout
October container volumes were down 6.2 percent at the Port of Long Beach compared to the same month last year, as the fallout from the Hanjin bankruptcy continues to settle. According to the port, a total of 581,808 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) moved through docks last month. Export TEUs were 1.2 percent down, relatively flat compared to last October, to 126,770 TEUs. Total imports were 296,711 TEUs, 3.7 percent off.
Silverstream Air Lubrication for Cruise Ship Refit
Silverstream Technologies, makes of air lubrication technology for the shipping industry, signed a contract with a major cruise line to retrofit its proprietary Silverstream System on one of its vessels. The Silverstream System will be retrofitted onto the vessel in 2017. Extensive performance analysis of data from Silverstream’s original sea trial funded by Shell confirmed consistent net efficiency savings in excess of 4% and up to 8% for larger vessels.

Parker Bestobell Secures $5mln Contract
Parker Bestobell Marine, a supplier of cryogenic valves and part of Parker, a global leader in motion and control technologies, has secured a nine vessel order, worth $5m, making it the single biggest order that the company to date. The contract is with DSME (Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering) in South Korea to supply cryogenic globe and the vessels are part of a series of 15 liquid natural gas (LNG) carriers destined for the Yamal gas field in Russian Siberia.
US-flag Lakes Cargos Down in October
U.S.-flag Great Lakes freighters (lakers) moved 8.8 million tons of cargo in October, a decrease of 9.2 percent compared to a year ago, and 10.2 percent below the month’s five-year average, according to the Lake Carriers’ Association (LCA). October was also the sixth consecutive month in which cargos trailed the previous year. Iron ore cargos for the steel industry totaled 4.4 million tons in October, an increase of 5.3 percent compared to a year ago.
New Dive Support Vessel for Technip
Technip’s latest newbuild, the diving support vessel (DSV) Deep Explorer, was officially named on Saturday, November 12, in Norway. The traditional naming ceremony was held at VARD’s Langsten shipyard. The vessel godmother was Heidi Brovoll-Bø, wife of Knut Bø, President of Technip’s North Sea Canada region. The vessel hull was built by Vard Tulcea shipyard in Romania, and then towed to Vard Langsten in Norway for equipment outfitting and commissioning.
ABB, MTU Test VCM System Durability
Durability field-test results of ABB’s variable valve train system, Valve Control Management (VCM), have shown unprecedented success of the technology on an MTU high speed gas engine. The successful running of each VCM actuator for 7,000 hours on an engine is an important milestone for the forthcoming serialization of this technology. Typically, a durability test for serialization lasts around 5,000 hours for large engines.
