US Coast Guard Barque Eagle Sails to New York
The U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Eagle sailed into New York City, Thursday, as part of a voyage commemorating 70-years since the original journey from northern Germany to New York. The historic Eagle – the only active commissioned sailing vessel in the U.S. armed services – was constructed in 1936 and was acquired from Germany as a war reparation following World War II. The shipe is now primarily used to train cadets from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy.
Great Lakes Limestone Trade Down 18% in July
Shipments of limestone on the Great Lakes totaled 3,348,040 tons in July, a decrease of 18 percent compared to a year ago, according to the Lakes Carriers’ Association (LCA). July’s loadings were also 14 percent below the month’s five-year average. Loadings out of U.S. quarries totaled 2.6 million tons, a decrease of 26 percent compared to a year ago., while shipments from Canadian quarries totaled 760,000 tons, an increase of 35 percent compared to a year ago, LCA said.

Crowley Wins LNG Supply Deal in Puerto Rico
Crowley Maritime Corp. said its liquefied natural gas (LNG) services group has been awarded a multi-year contract to supply containerized LNG from the U.S. mainland to Molinos de Puerto Rico, the Caribbean arm of Ardent Mills LLC, supplier of flour, wheat, corn and rice-based food ingredients. The contract was executed through Crowley’s subsidiary Carib Energy (USA) LLC, and includes both the supply and transportation of LNG.
Protea Developing Heavy Lift Cargo Cranes
Poland based Protea, supplier of offshore and marine lifting and mechanical handling equipment including cranes, winches and launch and recovery systems, is expanding its offering to also deliver heavy lift cargo cranes. 1790 - The Revenue Cutter Service is established by Congress, authorizing the construction of 10 vessels to enforce federal tariff and trade laws and prevent smuggling. The service receives its present name, U.S. Coast Guard, in 1915 under an act of Congress that merges the Revenue Cutter Service with the Life-Saving Service, thereby providing the nation with a single maritime service dedicated to saving life at sea and enforcing the nation's maritime laws.
