Georgia's Ports Back in Action
After being closed last week due to Hurricane Matthew, the Savannah River channel has reopened for commercial traffic Wednesday morning at 7 a.m., with 11 vessels transiting the channel by mid-afternoon, nine of which will be worked at Garden City Terminal and two at Ocean Terminal, the Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) reported. By the end of the day, the Garden City Terminal was working nine vessels, moving nearly 800 containers per hour, with an anticipated 7,800 container moves for the day.

Long Beach Says Cargo Volumes Hurt by Hanjin Fallout
Container volumes at the Port of Long Beach declined 16.6 percent year-over-year in September as the effects of the Hanjin bankruptcy reached the U.S. West Coast. According to the port, its longshore workers moved 546,805 twenty-foot equivalent units last month. This included 282,945 TEUs in imports, down 15 percent from September 2015, a month which capped off the port’s best quarter ever. Exports dropped to 120,383 TEUs, a decrease of 4.2 percent.

Liebherr Maritime Crane has delivered the largest mobile harbor crane of the Caribbean to Kingston Wharves Limited in Jamaica. The LHM 600 is equipped with an elongated tower extension and eases the handling of big container vessels up to Super-Post-Panamax size. In November 2015 Kingston Wharves ordered the first Liebherr mobile harbor crane, type LHM 550 high rise version. The crane is the biggest mobile harbor crane in operation in Jamaica.

Evidence Suggests Houthi Role in Strike on US Warship

DCNS Mulls Buying Stake in STX France
The head of the French state-controlled naval defence group DCNS said on Wednesday it was "closely studying" a possible stake purchase in STX France, a shipyard subsidiary of the struggling South Korean conglomerate STX Corp. Herve Guillou said DCNS was not however looking at the option of taking a majority stake. The French state holds a 33 percent minority stake in STX France, which runs naval shipyards in Saint-Nazaire on the west coast. Loss-making STX Corp is in administration.
