1850 - USS Advance and USS Rescue sail from New York in a failed attempt to rescue Sir John Franklins Expedition, lost in the Arctic since 1847. Caught in the ice and after tremendous hardship, USS Advance returns on Aug. 20, 1851. Rescue returns Sept. 1939 - USS Squalus (SS 192) suffers a catastrophic main induction valve failure during a test dive off the New Hampshire coast and is partially flooded, killing 26 crew members.

First 100% Battery Powered Air Supported Vessel Launched
The result of a five-year-long EU project, the world’s fastest Air Supported Vessel (ASV), fully powered by lithium-ion battery energy storage system (BESS), has been launched at Latitude Yachts in Riga, Latvia. The new first of its kind vessel BB Green operates at a speed of 30 knots (56km/h) and holds up to 70 passengers plus bikes. It will initially be used for demonstration purposes across Europe. The ASV technology reduces water resistance by having the ship operate on an air cushion.
UASC Completes Award Winning Finance Deal
United Arab Shipping Company (UASC) announced the recent conclusion of a series of transactions that resulted in the issuance by a U.S. based trust of $162 million of Enhanced Maritime Trust Certificates (EMTC). The EMTCs were issued in an offering pursuant to Section 4(a)(2) and Regulation S under the U.S. Securities Act, and the transaction marks UASC’s debut financing in the debt capital markets.
First Cat Marine Hybrid Thruster Delivered
Engineering specialists at Caterpillar Marine’s new Marine Solutions Center are overseeing delivery of the first Cat Marine Hybrid Thruster system, being delivered this month to an undisclosed shipyard in Singapore and will be commissioned midyear. Caterpillar Marine said the new propulsion setup outperforms diesel mechanical systems in all partial load conditions, and offers improved fuel economy and substantial through-life savings for a variety of offshore support vessels (OSV).
