First 100% Battery Powered Air Supported Vessel Launched
The result of a five-year-long EU project, the world’s fastest Air Supported Vessel (ASV), fully powered by lithium-ion battery energy storage system (BESS), has been launched at Latitude Yachts in Riga, Latvia. The new first of its kind vessel BB Green operates at a speed of 30 knots (56km/h) and holds up to 70 passengers plus bikes. It will initially be used for demonstration purposes across Europe. The ASV technology reduces water resistance by having the ship operate on an air cushion.

United Arab Shipping Company (UASC) announced the recent conclusion of a series of transactions that resulted in the issuance by a U.S. based trust of $162 million of Enhanced Maritime Trust Certificates (EMTC). Engineering specialists at Caterpillar Marine’s new Marine Solutions Center are overseeing delivery of the first Cat Marine Hybrid Thruster system, being delivered this month to an undisclosed shipyard in Singapore and will be commissioned midyear. Caterpillar Marine said the new propulsion setup outperforms diesel mechanical systems in all partial load conditions, and offers improved fuel economy and substantial through-life savings for a variety of offshore support vessels (OSV).

Industry Group Developing New Hull Coating System
PPG’s protective and marine business has received EU Funding for a project which aims to produce a new fouling protection system for commercial vessels. A project development group including PPG, MACtac, Meyer Werft/ND Coatings, VertiDrive and Hamburg Ship Model Basin HSVA are currently working together to establish an automatic application process for allowing a self-adhesive/fouling release film to be used on commercial seagoing vessels.
