‘Old Salt’ Designation Passed to Vice Adm. Tidd
The “Old Salt” designation, honoring the Surface Warfare Officer (SWO) serving on active duty with the earliest Surface Warfare Qualification, passed from Adm. Sam Locklear to Vice Adm. Kurt Tidd at a June 22, 2015 ceremony at Washington, DC. Locklear, the recent Commander, U.S. Pacific Command, retired on June 30, 2015. Tidd is currently the Assistant to the Chairman of the Joint Chief of Staff. Locklear has been the “Old Salt” since May 2014.
Coast Guard Monitoring Rocket Debris off US
The U.S. Coast Guard informs it is working with SpaceX and partner agencies to monitor the debris field of the exploded Falcon 9 rocket in the Atlantic Ocean more than 150 miles off the Florida-Georgia coast. The unmanned SpaceX CRS-7 rocket was meant to deliver supplies, hardware and other cargo to the International Space Station, but a launch failure caused it to explode just after liftoff from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station on June 28.

Ki-tack Lim from the Republic of Korea has been elected as the new Secretary General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), with effect from January 1, 2016, for an initial term of four years, the IMO announced. The current president of Busan Port Authority, Lim has served as the Republic of Korea’s Deputy Permanent Representative to IMO from 2006 to 2009 and was Chairman of the Sub-Committee on Flag State Implementation (FSI) from 2002 to 2004.
Fuel Pipe Leak at Port of Prince Rupert
Efforts are underway at Prince Rupert’s industrial waterfront to stop a slow leak from an abandoned fuel pipe, the Prince Rupert Port Authority reports. Seepage at the Port of Prince Rupert was first observed Sunday, with immediate action taken to prevent the contaminant from escaping into the marine environment, according to the port authority. Excavation work has permitted access to a nearby junction from which the pipe can be flushed and capped.
