Thrustmaster Announces Factory Expansion
Thrustmaster of Texas, a manufacturer of commercial marine propulsion products, signed a deal last week to expand its Houston-based production facility by 100,000 sqft (93,000 sq m). Major revisions to the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (The STCW Convention) came into force in 2012. The “Manila Amendments - 2010” were adopted at a diplomatic conference at Manila, in the Philippines in 2010. These aim to establish a Global standard for Training and Certification of seafarers to ensure operation of technically advanced ships of the future.
CMA CGM Acquires 7,000 Reefer Containers
The CMA CGM Group announced it has acquired more than 7,000 of last generation 40’ High Cube Reefer containers including 6,000 low consumption engines. The CMA CGM Group said regularly invests Reefer containers that reduce carbon print by 60% compare to the first generation’s Reefers, allow a precise controlling of the cold chain and optimize the atmosphere control, operate a phytosanitary cold treatment needed for perishable goods and lengthen significantly their shelf life.
'New Tango' Brings More Post-Panamax Ships to Charleston
The SC Ports Authority today received the first ship call of a new consolidated East Coast South America service that brings additional post-Panamax vessels to Charleston. The newly-formed "New Tango" weekly service includes Hamburg Süd/Aliança, Hapag-Lloyd/CSAV, as well as two carriers new to this trade in the Port of Charleston, NYK and Yang Ming. The deployment of larger ships in the service provides the opportunity for Charleston to grow container volumes in this trade.

The 397-meter-long, 56-meter-wide Edith Mærsk has a draught of 16 meters and carries up to 15,500 TEU (twenty-foot equivalent units). Smith Brothers, Inc., Chesapeake Bay-based barge and marine equipment charter company, recently added the tug Capt. Kenneth to its fleet of inland and truckable tugs. With the 99-year-old namesake looking on alongside his son, Jeffrey Smith, company president, Eleanor Smith christened the vessel after her grandfather, Kenneth. "This boat reflects the hard work and commitment of the Smith Brothers team," said Jeffrey Smith. The Capt. Kenneth is 50' x 19' x 7.5" with an operating draft of 6'.
LNG America, Buffalo Marine to Design LNG Bunker Fuel Network
LNG America announced it has entered an agreement with Buffalo Marine Service, Inc. (Buffalo Marine) to cooperate on the design of an LNG bunker fuel network for the U. S. Gulf Coast region. LNG America is developing a hub-and-spoke delivery system for LNG as fuel for the marine market and other high horsepower applications. Ultimately, LNG America will establish delivery infrastructure for the delivery of LNG as fuel in major U.S. ports.
