Rodriguez Appointed Deputy Maritime Administrator
Mike Rodriguez, U.S. Merchant Marine Academy Alum, was sworn in as Deputy Administrator of the U.S. Department of Transportation Maritime Administration (MARAD). Rodriguez has more than 35 years experience as a maritime industry professional in both the public and private sectors. He joins MARAD from the Navy’s National Maritime Intelligence-Integration Office. Prior to that, he served in the Military Sealift Command and in other active duty tours in the Navy.

The U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) issued a safety alert to raise awareness regarding the importance of using proper replacement parts and equipment in accordance with their intended purpose. Recently, a casualty occurred on a passenger vessel operating about a mile offshore in the Atlantic Ocean. A crewmember, while making a round in a machinery space, noticed that a small fuel spray fire had developed above one of the four propulsion engines.

Davie Inks Two Ship Repair Contracts
Chantier Davie Canada Inc. announced the signing of two new contracts, one with CSL Group and the other with the Canadian Coast Guard. Davie’s contract with CSL Group will see CSL Group’s MV Baie St. Paul arrive in the shipyard in January for a period of six weeks to perform repair and maintenance activities. The Canadian Coast Guard awarded Davies the contract for the vessel CCGS Des Groseilliers, carried out with the cooperation of Babcock Canada Inc.
Emissions Reductions Persist at Port of LA
The Port of Los Angeles continues to make strides in cutting pollution from ships, trucks, trains, cargo-handling equipment and harbor craft, according to the latest annual inventory of emissions from port-related mobile sources. The Port’s 2013 Inventory of Air Emissions shows the Port has set new records with diesel particulate matter (DPM) down 80 percent, nitrogen oxides (NOx) down 57 percent and sulfur oxides (SOx) down 90 percent over eight years of aggressive clean air measures.
Quebec Eyes Exports of Oils Sand Crude, LNG
Canada's Quebec province could start exporting crude from oil sands and also liquefied natural gas to Asia and Europe from 2017-2018, as buyers search for alternative suppliers to Russia, Quebec's energy minister said. The standoff between Russia and the West over Ukraine has increased Europe's quest for alternative suppliers of oil and gas and Canada's exports to Europe have already started to pick up in the last few months.
Search Continues for Trawler Crew
Humber Coastguard is coordinating the search for the missing skipper and four crew of the trawler, Ocean Way. The trawler was last heard from about 100 miles east of the Farne Islands.

Drum Cussac has provided this service to a large number of clients since 2008.

As from the start of October 2014, KOTUG is assisting all LNG vessels at the Brunei LNG Terminal with three powerful Rotortugs. Brunei Shell Petroleum Company awarded KOTUG as its exclusive towage provider with a 24/7 operation, supported by local management. Three 80-ton-plus bollard pull strong tugs of the Rotor concept are in charge for the berthing and unberthing operations of LNG tankers, standby services during loading, oil spill response and firefighting duties.

New DEC 3500 Controller from Kohler
Kohler’s newly designed Decision-Maker 3500 (DEC 3500) controller is equipped with paralleling and load-management software – allowing for automatic paralleling of two generators without the cost and extra footprint of switchgear. “While load requirements have increased due to advanced electronics equipment, onboard space is still at a premium,” said Frank Formas of Kohler Power Systems. The DEC 3500 offers a newly designed customer interface for easier data entry and retrieval.
Freight Rate Peak Forecasted for 2016
