Leading French ferry and holiday company, Brittany Ferries, says it has placed an order for a new cruise-ferry that will be its largest yet, and one of the biggest such vessels in the world. India's Goa Shipyard Delivers Two-Hundredth Vessel

Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) handed over the 105-m patrol vessel INS SUMEDHA to the Indian Navy and the largest ever constructed by them marking the yard's 200th ship construction delivery. The 200th vessel was handed over by RAdm (Retd.) Vineet Bakhshi, VSM, Chairman & Managing Director, Goa Shipyard Limited to Cdr. Anand E. Kulkarni, Commanding Officer Designate, “INS SUMEDHA” in presence of RAdm Atul Khanna, VSM CSO(Tech.) Eastern Naval Command in a simple ceremony in Goa.

The Irish Naval Service patrol ship LÉ Aisling stood by the tanker 'Hellespont Charger' in rough weather at the request of the Irish Coast Guard until the arrival of the tugboat after the chemical tanker with 22 crew on board lost power on its main engines 400 miles west of Loop Head, reports Ireland's RTE News. The tanker with 15,000 tonnes of caustic soda on board was taken in tow by the tug Thrax towards the River Shannon where the cargo is desined for the Aughinish Alumina plant there.

Van Voorden Completes Big Stainless Steel Propeller Order

Van Voorden Castings BV from Zaltbommel, the Netherlands, has just completed a large order for four 25-tonne stainless steel propellers for a Canadian ice class ferry to be built by Italian yard Fincantieri for their client Société des traversiers du Québec. These propellers, of diameters 2900 mm and 3500 mm, have a combined weight of over 25 tonnes of high quality stainless steel and will be used for two contra-rotating podded drives.

USCG: Marijuana Use Unacceptable for Mariners

The U.S. Coast Guard issued a notice to ensure that mariners, marine employers, Medical Reviewing Officers and the public are knowledgeable of the continuing prohibition of marijuana use by those serving in safety-sensitive positions in the maritime transportation industry. The Coast Guard said it is important to note that marijuana remains a drug listed in Schedule I of the Controlled Substances Act.

According to the U.S. Coast Guard, a 26-foot tugboat lost control of the barge it was towing off Atlantic Beach, N.Y., Monday evening. Coast Guard and state officials are responding to mitigate any hazards to the waterways and beaches nearby. The Coast Guard was notified at 7:35 p.m. on Monday night that the towing vessel “PUSHY” had lost control of the 125-foot deck barge it was towing following an interaction with a large swell off of Atlantic Beach, N.Y.
