International Recognition for Fast Displacement Hull Form
Galactica Star, the first vessel to feature the Fast Displacement Hull Form (FDHF), has won the award for the best high-speed yacht over 45 meters in length at the World Super Yacht Awards on May 3, 2014. The jury reported that the award was granted because of Galactica Star’s “technically innovative FDHF (Fast Displacement Hull Form) design, developed by Van Oossanen Naval Architects”. Van Oossanen started the development of this new type of hull form in 2009.

USCG Proposes LED Lighthouse Lens Replacements
The U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) announced a proposal to remove the Fresnel Classical Lenses from two lighthouses in Duluth, Minnesota, this fall in partnership with the Minnesota State Historic Preservation Office. The two lighthouses affected are the Duluth Harbor South Breakwater Outer Light and Duluth Harbor North Pier Light. The Fresnel Classical lenses would be replaced with modern light emitting diode (LED)lanterns which are more dependable and energy efficient.

Imtech Wins Northern Lighthouse VSAT Contract
Remote monitoring enables early detection of problems and correction of system faults. Imtech Marine has been awarded a three-year contract by Northern Lighthouse Board to provide VSAT systems with connectivity and value added services. The contract also includes maintenance services for the five vessels operated by Northern Lighthouse Board and Trinity House in the U.K. The five vessels maintain safe shipping lanes around the Scottish and English sectors of the British Isles coastline.
