Norway's Kvitsøy VTS Center Goes Live

The first of five Norwegian regional VTS Centers to be upgraded under the February 2013 VTS Framework contract between the Norwegian Coastal Administration (NCA) and Kongsberg Norcontrol IT (KNC) has been completed. The NCA, Western Coastal Administration (KYV-V) officially celebrated the opening of the modernized Kvitsøy Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) Center, which was renovated as part of the 36 million NOK (4.4 mil euros) national VTS upgrade project, on June 11, 2014.

ISP, Ocean Signal Equip Schooner with Safety Products

UK-based maritime firms, International Safety Products and Ocean Signal, have collaborated to equip Britain’s last remaining three-masted top-sail schooner with essential marine safety equipment. The two firms have supplied lifejackets and an EPIRB (Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon) to the Kathleen & May. Located in Canning Dock, Liverpool, bystanders will see the ISP and Ocean Signal flags waving high on the vessel’s main mast.

The U.K. Ministry of Defense has engaged in a major program to update and upgrade its current fleet of frigates. In the next decade, Type 26 Global Combat Ships will become the backbone of the Royal Navy, replacing its existing Type 23 Frigates. The Type 26 will incorporate the latest in hybrid propulsion technology: at low speeds, it will run on an electric drive system, while at high speeds, it will take power from the gas turbine.

Carnival Profit More than Doubles

Carnival Corp, the world's largest cruise operator, said its quarterly profit more than doubled as costs fell. Net income rose to $106 million, or 14 cents per share, in the second quarter ended May 31, from $41 million, or 5 cents per share, a year earlier.
