Long Beach to Open Empty Container Depot
Empty container depot set to open Dec. The Temporary Empty Container Depot on Pier S at the Port of Long Beach is scheduled to open Dec. 29. The depot was approved by the Long Beach Board of Harbor Commissioners in November to free up truck-trailer chassis and ease congestion on the docks at the second busiest seaport in North America. The 30-acre site will be operated by Pasha Stevedoring and Terminals, a private company selected by the Port.

EPA, USCG Extend Agreement with Royal Caribbean
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) authorized formal exemptions by Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines that allow for the enlargement of the cruise line’s research program to develop and install exhaust gas scrubber systems on its cruise ships. Under the exemption, as articulated in MARPOL, Royal Caribbean will expand the program from six to 19 ships. This emission control technology will be used in waters surrounding U.S.
IMO: New ECA Sulfur Limits FAQ
Ships trading in designated emission control areas will have to use onboard fuel oil with a sulfur content of no more than 0.10% from January 1, 2015, against the limit of 1.00% in effect up until December 31, 2014.
