Grounded Freighter Refloated in Lake St. Clair
The Federal Rideau, a 656-foot freighter that had been hard aground in the downbound shipping channel of Lake St. Clair since early Sunday morning, was refloated early Tuesday morning and is now safely anchored in the Detroit River at the Belle Island Anchorage. Divers are scheduled to conduct a damage assessment survey of the vessel, and repairs will be made if necessary. There is no resultant pollution and no injuries were reported. At around 3 a.m.

Obituary: Joseph E. LeBlanc Jr.
Joseph E. LeBlanc Jr. passed away on June 27, 2014. He was 87 years old. Joe was president of Three Rivers Rock Quarry in Smithland, Ky. (a division of Harbert Construction), Three Rivers Towing, Harcon Barge Lines and Louisiana Limestone during the late 60s and 70s. He also worked later for Luhr Brothers at their St. Genevieve, Mo. Facility and was General Manager for Boyce Machinery in Morgan City, La. for a few years and also worked as a consultant and for NREC in Houma after he retired.

News Flash! Greek Shipowners Prefer Bulkers
The buying interest from Greek ship owners is focused on bulkers to an increasing extent, BIMCO said. Data from VesselsValue.com reveal that Greek owners were at the buying end of 43% of all bulker sales completed so far in 2014. As of June 2014, the number of Greek bulker purchases so far is 91, compared to 81 for the full year of 2012. The level of activity seen so far in 2014 would suggest Greek owners are on target to top the 199 bulker purchases completed in 2013.

200th Airbus A320 Shipset Loaded for China
The 200th shipset for Airbus’s A-320 final assembly line (FAL) in Tianjin, China, was loaded on to the containership COSCO Hope at HHLA’s Container Terminal Tollerort on July 28 and dispatched onwards to Asia. VSTEP Wins Mexican Navy Simulator Contract
The Mexican Navy selected VSTEP to supply a Class A NAUTIS Full Mission Bridge (FMB) Simulator and 24 NAUTIS desktop trainer stations for the Naval Academy in Veracruz. The simulators will be installed at the new simulator training wing of the Heroica Escuela Naval Militar set to open in Q4 2014. The Heroica Escuela Naval Militar is the school where future officers are trained for the General Corps of the Mexican Navy.
Floating Production: $1.2b Speculative FLNG Ordered
The floating production business continues to be very strong, particularly in the LNG gas processing sector. Last month saw a speculatively ordered floating liquefaction plant – a $1.2 billion contract – as well as several regasification vessel contracts. Here’s a snapshot of what’s happening in the business. In total, 320 oil/gas floating production units are now in service, on order or available for reuse on another field. FPSOs account for 65% of the existing systems, 78% of systems on order.
