Vard Wins Rem Offshore Contract
Vard Holdings Limited announced that it has secured a contract for the design and construction of one Offshore Construction and Anchor Handling Vessel for Rem Offshore. The contract value is approximately NOK 800 million. The vessel will be of VARD 2 06 design, recently developed by Vard Design in Ålesund, Norway. Delivery is scheduled from Vard Brattvaag in Norway in 1Q 2016. The hull of the vessel will be delivered from Vard Tulcea in Romania.

VSTEP Simulators Power New Tug & OSV Training Center
During a ceremony on June 3, the new 360-Control Tug & OSV Training Center was officially opened for the general public and customers. The simulators for the training center are delivered and installed by VSTEP. The high-tech training center is a project of 360-Control, a joint venture between Iskes Towage & Salvage and Damen Shipyards and is located at the port entrance of the Amsterdam North sea canal.
MHI Delivers Cargo-passenger Ship Tachibana-Maru
On June 4 Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) delivered the cargo-passenger ship Tachibana-Maru to Tokai Kisen Co., Ltd. at its Shimonoseki Shipyard and Machinery Works. The vessel is a "super eco-ship" with a high-efficiency propulsion system that achieves energy savings, environmental load reduction and enhanced passenger comfort and safety, MHI said. Great Lakes Limestone Trade Dips 8%
Shipments of limestone on the Great Lakes totaled 3.3 million tons in May, a decrease of 8 percent compared to a year ago, the Lake Carriers’ Association reported, adding that shipments were also 3 percent below the month’s long-term average. Shipments from U.S. ports totaled 2.8 million tons, a decrease of 9 percent compared to a year ago. However, loadings at Canadian quarries were a virtual carbon copy of a year ago.

Costa Concordia Salvage Update
Work is in progress at Giglio to complete the installation of S5, the eighth of the 15 sponsons to be positioned on the starboard side of the Concordia. In the meantime, remediation activity on sponson S13 has been completed in Genoa and the sponson departed from Genoa May 31 on board pontoon MAK, having been now renamed S18. Currently there are more than 300 people working 24/7 in Giglio to prepare the wreck for the refloating phase.

Haifa Port Orders another Powerful Tug
Zamakona Yards, one of Spain's main shipbuilding and ship-repair groups, has signed a contract with Haifa Port Authority for the construction of Haifa, a Voith Schneider tug boat, to aid in port operations. The newbuilding will be powered by two MAN 8L27/38 engines with delivery set for August 2015. Haifa will be a sister to the Ilan I, which began towing and general harbor operations at Haifa Port in 2012.
Seychelles Conducts Oil Spill Exercise
A major exercise in implementing the national contingency plan for anti-pollution, search and rescue, and fire fighting was held in the waters off Mahé on 4 June. This complex exercise was carried out by a range of different agencies including the Seychelles Coast Guard, Air Force, Fire Fighting Services and Port Authority. The EUNAVFOR Atalanta Flagship Brandenburg also took part in the exercise, EUCAP Nestor experts provided support for the planning, preparations as well as its execution.
