New Design-11th Cape-size Bulk Carrier of Dunkerque-max Type. Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. (MES with President Mr. Yasuhiko Katoh) completed and delivered 174,600 dwt type bulk carrier, MV "New Expedtion" (MES HULL No. 1825) at its Chiba Works on February 1st, 2013 to Salute Maritime S.A., Panama. This ship is the 11th ship of the designed Cape-size Bulk Carrier of Dunkerque-max Type(*).

New Fuels for the Maritime Sector in Spain?

The European Union will support with over €1 million from the TEN-T Program a series of studies to assess the use of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) as a shipping fuel in the Port of Gijón in Spain. The project, which was selected for funding under the 2011 TEN-T Annual Call, involves conducting studies to evaluate the feasibility and plan the necessary infrastructure adaptations for the use of LNG as a shipping fuel in the Port of Gijón.
ESTC Earns ClassNK Certification

Leading class society ClassNK announced that it has certified the Bridge Resource Management (BRM), Electronic Chart Display Information Systems (ECDIS) and Engine-room Resource Management (ERM) training courses offered by the Evergreen Seafarer Training Center (ESTC). The new certification confirms that the training programs meet the requirements of ClassNK standards, IMO model course requirements and the STCW Code. The official certificate was presented to Evergreen Marine Corp. (Taiwan) Ltd.

Coast Guard Response to Vicksburg Spill Continues

The unified command continues to respond to a crude oil spill in the lower Mississippi River near mile marker 436 in Vicksburg, Miss., Thursday. At 10:05 a.m. response crews removed fuel from the damaged barge MOC-12 after reconfiguring oil-pump equipment. Following completion of the oil removal operations the damaged barge will be inspected and prepared for transit to a maritime facility in nearby Vicksburg.

The Port of Rotterdam reports 2012 fuel oil bunker volume fell from 11.6 to 10.3 million tonnes. The Port of Rotterdam Authority attributes the decline as a whole to the more efficient way of sailing adopted by shipping (‘super slow steaming’). However, gas oil bunkering increased slightly; from 530,000 to 550,000 tonnes. Container vessels account for almost half of the close on 23,000 bunkers sold and three-quarters of the total quantity of fuel oil bunkered.

Sailors aboard 'USS Abraham Lincoln' (CVN 72) completed a major step in its overhaul, removing all flight deck catapults. The aircraft carrier's V-2 division teamworked with Huntington Ingalls Industries, Newport News Shipbuilding shipyard workers, allowing them to begin their inspection for structural corrosion beneath the catapult troughs sooner. In all, Lincoln's V-2 Division saved 4,800 man-hours of labor from shipyard workers, saving the Navy $480,000.
