MARAD Examines Impacts of Panama Canal Expansion
The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration (MARAD) today released a study on shipping patterns and industry costs that will help the United States prepare for the anticipated impact on its ports, waterways and intermodal freight systems from the Panama Canal expansion. The expansion of the Panama Canal, scheduled for completion in 2015, will give much larger vessels, called “Post Panamax” vessels, greater access to the U.S. ports on the East and Gulf coasts.

Oil Tankers Anchored at Qingdao Following Explosion
Inchcape Shipping Services (ISS) is advising that oil tankers are remaining at anchorage having been evacuated from Qingdao Port, China. Currently only the oil terminals are affected, with the exception of Dagang terminal, located at east Jiaozhou Bay. Many tankers have received changed discharge instructions from domestic receivers. Other bulk, general cargo and container terminals are operating normally.
MTU Diesel Engines to Power Singapore’s New Naval Fleet
Tognum announced that its MTU Series 4000 diesel engines have been chosen by Singapore Technologies Marine Ltd. to power eight Littoral Mission Vessels for the Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN). The Littoral Mission Vessels will be installed with state of the art, high efficiency MTU 20V 4000 M93L diesel engines, known for their low consumption and long service life, with each unit producing 4300kW (5766bhp), Tognum said.

Island Ventures Orders Two Ulstein Vessels, First in U.S.
Edison Chouest Offshore and Island Offshore are ordering two new OCV vessels through the company Island Ventures II LLC. One vessel will be built at Ulstein Verft, Norway, and the other in the United States. Ulstein Verft has been contracted to build a new offshore construction vessel of the Ulstein SX165 design. This will be the largest vessel built at the yard so far, as well as its largest single shipbuilding contract. The vessel is scheduled for delivery Q3 2015.
