Jeppesen Revolutionizes ENC Licensing With New Solution
Jeppesen has revolutionized the navigational chart industry by introducing FlatFee licensing for its official Electronic Navigation Charts (ENCs). Jeppesen FlatFee lets mariners purchase some or all of nine worldwide zones at an affordable fixed price. Vessels are able to view and use all charts, for voyage planning and navigation, without limitations for one year. If sailing needs change, additional zone subscriptions can be added without having to create new licenses.

Rederij Groen Orders another Damen Vessel
During a contract signing ceremony at Europort 2013, Maaskant Shipyards Stellendam, part of Damen Shipyards Group signed the contract to build an additional Seismic Research Support Vessel for Rederij Groen. This latest contract follows last month’s order of two new Seismic Research Support Vessels (SRSVs) that are due for delivery in the third quarter of 2014. This third vessel, initially only an option, completes the latest phase of RederijGroen’s expansion and will be delivered in 2015.
WaveWalker Wins British Engineering Award
Fugro Seacore recently collected the New Mechanical Product of the Year award for the WaveWalker 1 walking jack-up at this year’s British Engineering Excellence Awards (BEEAs). WaveWalker is an eight-legged walking jack-up barge (self-elevating work platform - SEWP) which was designed especially for marine operations in rough seas, surf zones, beaches and other intertidal locations where operation of traditional SEWPs is uneconomic.
Hempel Introduces New Hull Coating Concept
Global coatings supplier Hempel has launched HEMPAGUARD, a new hull coating concept for the shipping industry, which Hempel said offers both outstanding resistance to fouling during idle periods and significant fuel savings. The technology, dubbed ActiGuard, has been five years in development and is based on silicone-hydrogel and biocide science. HEMPAGUARD available as two separate products: HEMPAGUAR X5 and HEMPAGUARD X7.

Doyle Talks LNG, Exports, Panama Canal with Japanese Officials
Earlier this week, Commissioner William P. Doyle met with Japanese public and private sector officials to discuss U.S. natural gas, exports, and the Panama Canal. Japan is the world's largest importer of liquefied natural gas (LNG). The country has relied on imported natural gas for decades as part of its energy portfolio. However, the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami of March 11, 2011, disabled the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant.

The float-out of Mein Schiff 3, an environmentally friendly cruise ship being built for TUI Cruises, was performed at STX Turku Shipyard on Friday, November 8, 2013. At the press conference held at STX Finland Oy’s Turku Shipyard earlier the same day, Richard J. Acquisition Brings Bibby into Marine Surveying
Bibby Ship Management Group Ltd. announced the acquisition of Murray Fenton (India) Surveyors Limited. The acquisition was made via Bibby Ship Management India Pvt. Ltd., and will see India’s service offering expand into marine, cargo and offshore surveying including marine audit services. Operations will be based in Mumbai and Gujarat, with geographic expansion into other areas of India planned for the future. Bibby Ship Management welcomed Capt. Kapil Dev Bahl.

Somali Pirates Again Active, Though Recent Losers
Just a few weeks after the Operation Commander of the EU Naval Force, Rear Admiral Bob Tarrant, issued another warning about the on-going piracy threat, there have been two more piracy related incidents off the Somali coast. The first incident involved EU Naval Force German frigate, FGS Niedersachsen which prevented 10 suspect pirates from getting far out to sea. The second incident was 460 miles south east of Mogadishu, when a merchant ship had to repel an attack from 5 armed pirates.
