Bristol Harbor Group Designs Two NYPA Tugs
Bristol Harbor Group, Inc. (BHGI) was recently awarded a contract by the New York Power Authority (NYPA) to engineer, design and perform construction supervision support services for two new tug vessels. The tugs will be used primarily for deployment, retrieval and maintenance of an ice boom annually installed near the outlet of Lake Erie to help protect NYPA’s hydroelectric plant intakes on the Niagara River from heavy ice floes. The designs are expected to be completed in 2014.

Aircraft Carrier Gerald R. Ford Takes First Voyage
Huntington Ingalls Industries' (HII) Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) division launched Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78) into the James River for the first time on Sunday. The first-of-class aircraft carrier was moved to the shipyard's Pier 3, where it will undergo additional outfitting and testing for the next 28 months. Gerald R. Ford has been under construction in Dry Dock 12 since November 2009 and was moved about one mile south to the shipyard's Pier 3 with the assistance of six tugboats.

Vice President Joe Biden visited the Port of Houston Authority's Bayport Container Terminal Monday to highlight the importance of ports and the Panama Canal expansion. Kvichak Marine Industries, Inc. was recently awarded a contract by Norton Sound Economic Development Corporation (NSEDC) to build an all-aluminum 66’ Shallow Draft Tender to be used for multiple fisheries in and around Norton Sound, Ak. Designed by Kvichak Marine, the 66’ x 25’ tender will be powered by twin Cummins QSM11 marine diesel engines rated for 450 BHP at 2100 RPM. The engines are coupled to ZF 360 transmissions that drive NiBrAl four-blade propellers.

Keppel FELS Delivers Third Accommodation Rig to Floatel
Keppel FELS Limited (Keppel FELS) celebrated the naming of their third consecutive accommodation semisubmersible (semi) rig built for Floatel International Ltd (Floatel). The rig will be delivered more than four months ahead of schedule and within budget. The rig was named Floatel Victory on November 19, 2013 at Keppel FELS and will be chartered to Chevron for work in the Gulf of Mexico and BP in the West Shetlands.
