Lloyd’s Register Funds Arctic Shipping Research Center
Aalto University, together with three other universities, has received significant funding for an international Research Center of Excellence for Arctic Technology from Lloyd’s Register Foundation (LRF). After an extensive international tendering process for fundamental research projects, LRF has established a Research Center of Excellence in Arctic Shipping and Operations. NYK Presents Model Vessel to ICS to Honor Chairmanship
To mark the Chairmanship of Masamichi Morooka, the International Chamber of Shipping was last night presented with a scale model of the award-winning NYK car carrier Auriga Leader, the world’s first solar-assisted vessel to be put into commercial service. The model was formally presented to ICS by Yasumi Kudo, President of NYK, in the presence of the ICS Chairman. The 60,000-metric-ton vessel is fitted with 328 solar panels which can generate as much as 40 kilowatts of power.

Boskalis Reports Exceptionally Good 2013 Third Quarter
Royal Boskalis Westminster N.V. (Boskalis) raises its 2013 net profit outlook to at least EUR 360-million. Boskalis says it has concluded an exceptionally good third quarter. Revenue, adjusted for the sale of the 40% stake in Archirodon, and earnings were higher than in the first and second quarter of 2013 against stable market conditions. The order book increased compared to the end of the first half of the year and adjusted for the sale of the 40% stake in Archirodon, to EUR 4.3 billion.
FSL Trust Making the Best of It in Q3 2013
Despite a caveat by auditors as to whether FSL Trust may continue as a going concern, due to the conditions of a loan covenant, the ship-owning trust has continued to ensure that its vessels have generated a return in the third quarter of 2013. The Trust suffered a 3QFY13 loss of US$8.9 million. This was partly due to recognition of an impairment loss of US$3.6 million caused by the lease defaults for two dry bulk carriers.
