Moore Begins as Port of L.A. Interim Director
Gary Lee Moore, who has served as Los Angeles City Engineer and General Manager of the city’s Bureau of Engineering for the past decade, has started his duties as interim executive director of the Port of Los Angeles. “Gary is a trusted public servant, with a 28-year track record with the City,” said Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, who appointed Moore to the position last month. “The port is a critical economic engine for the city and region,” said Moore.
LaGrange to Deliver State of the Port Address

Underwater Stern Thruster Removal and Reinstallation
Hydrex removed the stern thruster of a 69-meter offshore supply vessel and installed a new unit during the vessel’s stop in Limbee, Cameroon. By carrying out both parts of the operation underwater the ship could continue its commercial activities and did not have to go to drydock. The removal and reinstallation took place in September, but earlier a Hydrex diver/technician team performed a full underwater inspection of the stern thruster unit. This was done during a previous stop in Cameroon.

Wärtsilä to Launch Dual-fuel Engine Series
Wärtsilä successfully conducted full scale testing on gas of its low-speed two-stroke dual-fuel engine and is now introducing a full new range of engines based on its established and well-proven low pressure technology. The first engine utilizing this technology, the Wärtsilä RT-flex50DF, will be available for delivery in the third quarter of 2014. Other engines from the company's new Generation X series will follow and will be available for delivery during 2015 and 2016.

Seabulk Contracts NASSCO for Up to Two More Tankers
General Dynamics NASSCO, a wholly owned subsidiary of General Dynamics, has entered into a contract with Seabulk Tankers, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of SEACOR Holdings Inc., for the design and construction of one 50,000 deadweight ton LNG-conversion-ready product carrier with a 330,000 barrel cargo capacity, plus an option for one additional vessel. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2015, with delivery scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2016.

Hapag-Lloyd Reports Another Quarter of Net Profits
Following on from the second quarter, Hapag-Lloyd once again generated a profit in the third quarter of the current financial year, primarily as a result of substantial cost reductions. Between July and September 2013, the group recorded a profit of €16.6 million, despite freight rates that continued to deteriorate. The average freight rate in the third quarter was $1,476/TEU, which was well below the previous year’s figure of $1,647/TEU.

Lankoforce Riser Tethers for Knarr Field Development
Offshore mooring rope specialist, Lankhorst Ropes was awarded a contract by NOV Flexibles, Denmark, to supply Lankoforce riser tethers for the Knarr field development, located in 410m of water in the North Tampen region of the Norwegian Sector of the Northern North Sea. The riser tethers will be the first to use Dyneema DM 20, a high modulus polyethylene (HMPE) rope, for permanent subsea anchoring of flexible risers.
Crane Barge Towed from California to New York
After a 5,233 nautical mile tow of the ocean crane barge Thomas W from Long Beach, California through the Panama Canal, the Miss Lis reached its destination in the Hudson River, New York. The journey took 52 days. Tug and tow departed Long Beach during the first full week of August and arrived in New York in late September. Laborde Products repowered this engine with twin Mitsubishi S12R-MPTA engines rated at 2,800 bhp.
