Korean Shipyard Wins US$600-million Seaspan Order
Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) wins the order for five 14,000 TEU container ships, with a contract option for 5 more. The ultra-large container ships, measuring 368 m in length, 51 m in width, and 30 m in depth, are scheduled to be delivered from 2015. Upon delivery, the vessels will be charted by Seaspan Corp. to the Taiwan’s Yang Ming Marine Transport Corp on a long-term contract. Crowley’s ATB Crew Rescues Man from Tampa Bay
The crew aboard Crowley Maritime Corporation’s articulated tug-barge (ATB) Achievement/650-8 recently performed a heroic rescue of an injured man who was struggling to stay afloat near the base of the Sunshine Skyway Bridge in Tampa Bay, Fla. The on-watch crew noticed a man bobbing in the water on the port side of the vessel around the same time that emergency radio calls from the St. Petersburg Coast Guard were issued.

Ray Holubowicz, Father of Shipping Containerization and founder of UK based Marine Ventures Ltd, Dies at 88. Romuald Paul, better known as "Ray" Holubowicz, a prime mover in the shipping industry's changeover to the use of shipping containers, died on New Year's Day in England. He was 88. A native of Cudahy, Wisconsin, Ray Holubowicz was in the first (1942) graduating class of the United States Merchant Marine Academy (Kings Point, NY).
