Following the launch of the “Carlo Bergamini” last July, Fincantieri's Riva Trigoso (Genoa) shipyard has launched sister-ship frigate “Virginio Fasan”, which is due for delivery at the end of 2012. The vessel is the second of a series of Fremm vessels - Multi Mission European Frigates - which were ordered from Fincantieri by the Italian Navy within the framework of an Italo-French program of cooperation.

Huntington Ingalls Industries (NYSE:HII) said that its Ingalls Shipbuilding division received a $76 million fixed-price contract from the U.S. Coast Guard to purchase long-lead materials for a sixth National Security Cutter (NSC). Construction and delivery of the yet-to-be-named WMSL 755 will be performed at the company's Pascagoula facility. A second phase of the contract, when awarded, would bring the overall value to $88 million.

BBC launches new heavy-lift cargo service between Europe and Asia. On 26 March 2012, the BBC KARAN was the first vessel in the new Europe-Asia service of the multi-purpose and heavy-lift cargo shipping company BBC Chartering to berth at C. Steinweg (Süd West Terminal) in the Port of Hamburg. In Hamburg, the new “BBC Euro-Asia Express Line” service will be offering bi-weekly eastward sailings to Asia.

Rolls-Royce won a $69m order to design and equip two advanced offshore anchor handling vessels for Norwegian ship owner Farstad Shipping. The UT 731 CD vessels are designed and equipped to handle anchors for oil rigs, tow rigs to location and also serve as supply vessels. They can operate in extreme climatic conditions and ultra deep waters, undertaking precise rig manoeuvring operations in water up to 3,000m deep. They are also equipped for sub sea construction and installation duties.

The leaking hydrocarbons are believed to be coming in the well from a rock å which is above the producing reservoir of the Elgin field. The volume of this gas ingress is therefore difficult to estimate. Reports from Oil Spill Response (OSRL) surveillance flight indicate that the gas cloud is still stable and is heading away from Elgin facilities. Total confirms that the gas leak remains ongoing although the situation is currently stable.
