Naval Shipyard Wins Industrial Safety Award

Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard has won the Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) Shore Safety Award for large industrial activities, the Navy has announced. The awards recognize outstanding support and achievement in Navy safety and occupational health during fiscal year 2011. The Shipyard has lowered its injury rate nine out of the last 10 years to where it is now 70 percent below the national average for the ship building and repair industry.

A cruise ship steamed out of the British city of Southampton Sunday to retrace the route taken by the legendary ill-fated ocean liner Titanic 100 years ago, reports VOA. Many of the passengers sailing to New York on the Balmoral are relatives of those who lost their lives when the Titanic hit an iceberg and sank in the North Atlantic on April 14, 1912. The memorial cruise includes a stop at the spot where the Titanic went down. Passengers and crew will take part in a remembrance service.

A Russian warship will dock at the Syrian port of Tartus before planned exercises off the country's Mediterranean coast. The Smetlivy guided-missile destroyer will remain in the western Mediterranean through May. Smetlivy is the last Kashin-class destroyer in the Russian Navy. The ship returned to service after repairs in 2011. Its armament includes two 76-mm AK-726 guns and a SS-N-25 Switchblade anti-ship missile system.
