Rolls-Royce, the global power systems company, has secured a contract to supply power and propulsion systems for the two latest vessels in the U.S. Navy’s Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) program. Designed to operate in combat zones close to the shore (littoral waters), each LCS will be equipped with two Rolls-Royce MT30 gas turbines, powering four large Mk1 water jets. This will enable the vessels to reach speeds in excess of 40 knots.

Bayou La Batre, Alabama - Horizon Shipbuilding Inc. has delivered the M/V General Irwin, an inland river towboat, to the Army Corps of Engineers in Eufala, Alabama. The General Irwin is equipped with two steering rudders and four flanking rudders, and is powered by two Caterpillar diesel engines, providing 770 horsepower to her 48-inch propellers. Her hull speed when towing is four knots; her full speed is eight knots.

SeaHold GEOSHIPS Ltd., a marine and subsea services shipping company, has taken delivery of its second multi-purpose support vessel (MPSV) on a contract valued at over £30million, following a successful year for its current vessel, the Stril Explorer. Formed in 2003, Aberdeen-based GEOSHIPS will manage and crew the MPSV Loch Roag vessel, which it has taken on a five-year bareboat charter basis from Otto Marine Ltd.

In Harlingen the third of four Holland Class Oceangoing Patrol Vessels, "Friesland" built by Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding for the Royal Netherlands Navy, was transferred to the Defence Materiel Organization of the Ministry of Defence of the Netherlands. After delivery the Friesland will directly start an extensive testing and work-up program, yet without the Thales Integrated Mast Module (IMM), which will be installed early 2014.

The US$ 1.8-million GBPDS catanaran, built at South Boats Shipyard in Cowes, Isle of Wight, UK, named Dalby Derwent, is 17.5 metres long, constructed of aluminium and will be used to carry wind turbine technicians to and from the wind farm sites, and to deliver fuel and cargo to the wind turbines and associated offshore installations. The Dalby Derwent can carry up to 12 passengers with a crew of 3, and can lift upt ot 8 tonnes of cargo.
