The stricken cruise ship will spend another winter partially submerged close off the coast of Giglio, Italy. The consortium hired to re-float and remove the 114,500-ton ship presented this month a new timeline to the Osservatorio, the entity supervising the wreck salvage operations. Originally scheduled for completion by January 2013, the removal plan has been delayed until next spring. The presentation confirmed the previously presented and shared phases of the plan.

The expected record number of vessels using the Northern Sea Route between Europe & Asia this summer seems delayed. Terma has delivered radar, command control systems for the Danish Navy’s new fleet of frigates that are now preparing for operation. Denmark’s three new frigates in the Iver Huitfeldt-class, Iver Huitfeldt (F361), Peter Willemoes (F362), and Niels Juel (F363) have cruised together for the first time out of Denmark’s coast. Terma has delivered a number of mission-critical solutions for the Danish frigates, including the SCANTER 6000 radar.

National Snow & Ice Data Center reports ice appears to have broken the 2007 record daily extent. With two to three more weeks left in the melt season, sea ice continues to track below 2007 daily extents. Arctic sea ice extent fell to 4.10 million square kilometers (1.58 million square miles) on August 26, 2012. This was 70,000 square kilometers (27,000 square miles) below the September 18, 2007 daily extent of 4.17 million square kilometers (1.61 million square miles).
