Aberdeen Harbor attracted increased traffic across the first half of 2011, with both vessel numbers and tonnage on the up. Vessel numbers rose by seven percent on the same period last year to 3,746 while shipping tonnage increased from 11.6 million tonnes to 12.2 million tonnes. MOL Donates Six Container Ships
Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. announced the donation of six 20-foot reefer containers to the Soma-Futaba Fisheries Cooperative Association as part of its support activities for the disaster-stricken areas. The freezing and refrigeration facilities at the fishing port were destroyed by the tsunami following the Great East Japan Earthquake. WHOI Investigates Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill
Taking another major step in sleuthing the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill, a research team led by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) has determined what chemicals were contained in a deep, hydrocarbon-containing plume at least 22 miles long that WHOI scientists mapped and sampled last summer in the Gulf of Mexico, a residue of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.
