Danaos Corporation Adds Largest Vessels Using New Facility
Athens, Greece, April 6, 2011 - Danaos Corporation (NYSE: DAC) a leading international owner of containerships, announced that on March 10, 2011 and April 6, 2011, it took delivery of two newly built containerships, the Hanjin Germany and the Hanjin Italy, expanding its operational fleet to a total of 53 containerships aggregating 243,529 TEU. The Hanjin Germany and the Hanjin Italy, built at Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries Co.
Chemical Transport by Face Lifted Ships
Ferichloride (FeCl3) has been transported since some months via European channels and rivers, from Lille to Paris. Brand new here are the special double liners in thermoplastic material that are being installed inside the ships by the company Comenco Belgium. FeCl3 is a strong acid and is very corrosive towards steel. The plastic material used in this new system is resistant against all main acids and alkali. The tailor made plastic tanks have double walls.
EU NAVFOR Disrupts Another Suspected Pirate Action Group
During the early morning of April 6, the EU NAVFOR Finnish warship FNS PohjanMAA identified a suspected Pirate Action Group (PAG) consisting of a dhow and two attack skiffs approximately 250 NM South East of Salalah, Oman. The PAG is believed to have been responsible for an unsuccessful attack on a merchant vessel in the area the day before. When Pohjanmaa approached the PAG, the dhow tried to flee the scene and the suspected pirates were observed throwing equipment overboard.

Mid Ocean Tanker Contracts with BAE Systems to Launch Tanker
Mid Ocean Tanker Company, a joint venture of private equity firm Alterna Capital Partners and Mid Ocean Marine, has contracted with BAE Systems Southeast Shipyards in Mobile, Ala. for work required to launch MOTC’s 49,000dwt US Flag/Jones Act product-chemical tanker MV American Phoenix. MOTC acquired the vessel from the estate of American Heavy Lift in February of this year, and intends to complete it for service in US coastwise trade by late 2011 or early 2012.

NOAA Announces New Members of The Hydrographic Services Review Panel
NOAA Administrator Jane Lubchenco recently appointed nine new members to the Hydrographic Services Review Panel, a federal advisory committee that gives NOAA independent advice for improving ocean and coastal navigation products, information, data and services. “Optimizing the benefits of navigation services and products is a priority for the agency,” said Margaret Spring, chief of staff for NOAA and the agency’s representative to the Committee on the Marine Transportation System (CMTS).

APL To Train 20 Sri Lankan Seafarers Annually
COLOMBO, SRI LANKA, 5 APRIL, 2011: APL has agreed with Sri Lanka Port Authority’s Mahapola Training Institute to train 20 new seafarers from the Institute annually onboard its ships. The agreement was signed today by APL President Eng Aik Meng, the Sri Lanka Ports Authority and the Directorate General for Merchant Shipping. “This initiative demonstrates APL’s commitment to the Sri Lankan maritime community,” said APL President, Eng Aik Meng.
