Italian Oil Tanker Pirated in Indian Ocean
In the early hours of February 8, the Oil Tanker MV Savina Caylyn was pirated approximately 670 nautical miles East of Socotra Island in the Indian Ocean. The vessel was boarded after a sustained attack by one skiff with 5 suspected pirates firing small arms and four rocket propelled grenades. The MV Savina Caylyn has a deadweight of 104,255 tonnes and is Italian flagged and owned. The vessel was on passage to Pasir Gudang (Malaysia) from Bashayer (Sudan) when it was attacked.

Companies building vessels on the U.S. Gulf are servicing a flock of domestic and overseas clients while their offshore oil and gas customers wait for Washington to issue more drilling permits and safety rules. Some of the region's builders are busy making repairs. After a federal ban on deepwater drilling ended in October — three months after BP's well was capped — the Gulf remains quiet, but industry members expect business to improve eventually.

Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) won an order to build a $240m semi-submersible heavy transportation vessel (SSHTV) from Dockwise. The vessel is specially designed to transport more than 110,000 tons of offshore oil and gas production facilities including FPSO (Floating, Production, Storage and Offloading) units. After completed, FPSO are usually transported by two or three tug boats from shipyards to operating sites, taking about months to mobilize on the sites.
