Drydocks World Repairs Pirate-Attack Damage
Drydocks World has completed a major repair job for a German ship owner on a container vessel extensively damaged by Somali pirates earlier this year. The work, on the 12,600mt dwt 925 teu ship Taipan, was carried out in less than five weeks between 12 April and 15 May. It involved the repair of almost 300 bullet holes and cabling in 80 spots along the 460-ft length by process of fairing and building up, then grinding flush from both sides.

Jones Act Waiver Requested for Skimmers to Gulf
Fred McCallister, an investment banker with Allegiance Capital Corporation, sent a letter to Incident Commander Admiral Thad Allen on June 17 asking for a limited waiver of the Jones Act, to enable 12 to 25 foreign flagged skimmer ships to assist in clean-up efforts in the Gulf. "Many in the Gulf have been calling for this equipment, which can collect 3,500 gallons of oil per hour per vessel from Gulf waters.

Bollinger Marine Fabricators, L.L.C., Amelia, La., a Bollinger Shipyards, Inc. company, has delivered Bollinger hull # 561, B. No. 264, a double hull 60,000 BBL oil tank barge built to meet the requirements of the Oil Pollution Act of 1990 (OPA’90) to Bouchard Ocean Services, Inc., Melville, N.Y. Barge B. No. 264 is a manned ocean, clean oil tank barge measuring 350-ft long, with a 70-ft beam and a depth of 25-ft.

Thoma-Sea Shipyards Receives US Navy Contract
Thoma-Sea Ship Builders, LLC of Lockport, La, announced that the U.S. Navy has chosen the company to build a Catamaran Hull Hydrographic Survey Vessel. This vessel will be built by Thoma-Sea as a Foreign Military Sales (FMS) case for the country of Oman. Construction will be managed and supervised by the U.S. Navy. The contract value is approx $7.3m. Thoma-Sea’s partner in this proposal is Technology Associates, Inc (TAI) of New Orleans, La.
