ASA Members Respond to USS Port Royal
During the morning hours of February 7, 2009 three members of the American Salvage Association (ASA) provided salvage support to the U.S. Navy's Supervisor of Salvage to respond to the grounding of the USS Port Royal outside of Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. The 9,600-ton, 567 ft guided missile cruiser ran aground a half-mile off Honolulu International Airport's Reef Runway after leaving port for sea trials.

As a manufacturer of rollers, the Siegen-based Gontermann-Peipers company is a long-standing customer of the Rickmers Line. But it was not until this February that the weight of a roller topped the 250 ton limit. Based in Hamburg, Rickmers is a specialist in the worldwide consignment of general and project cargo as well as heavy-lift freight. River Ems Passage of AIDAluna
In the morning of 21 February 2009, the 69,200-gt club ship AIDAluna left the shipyard Meyer Werft for the North Sea. The Ems barrier was operated to support the passage down the river. In the midday hours of 21 February around 12 pm, AIDAluna passed the lock in Papenburg. Around 2 pm she reached the needle eye of the Friesen Bridge near Weener. Around 3:30 pm the ship passed the Jann-Berghaus Bridge at Leer. Both bridges have a maximum of 45 meters admission.

New Alaska Limit Seine Boat
For many years Alaskan salmon purse seiners have been limited to a length of 58 ft. This led to the development of some beautiful and relatively beamy wooden boats in the 1950s. In the intervening decades designers have fine-tuned the 58 ft design to add beam and depth.
