ABB Selected to Provide Propulsion for Washington State Ferries' New Hybrid Vessels

Washington State Ferries (WSF) has tapped ABB to design and supply the propulsion systems for its new series of five hybrid electric ferries. ABB was previously selected for the project in 2020 after the original build contract was awarded to Vigor, but the competitive bid process was relaunched following disagreements between WSF and the shipyard over price and other contract terms.In May of this year, WSF invited shipyards across the country to bid on construction for the five new ferries.

Corvus Energy to Supply Battery Systems for Panama Canal Tugs

The Panama Canal Authority ordered 10 hybrid tractor tugboats from European shipbuilder, Astilleros Armón, with options for another 10 similar vessels, and Corvus Energy will supply the battery systems for the hybrid-electric vessels.The Panama Canal Authority / Astilleros Armón contract signed in October 2023 was valued at $150 million total for the first 10 vessels, each 30-meter tugboats with 70-tonnes bollard pull.The tugboats will be equipped with hybrid-electric propulsion systems to reduce emissions during ship towage through the Panama Canal and while docking in Panamanian ports.

Ulstein Verft Begins Outfitting Olympic's Next CSOV

The second in a series of new construction service operation vessels (CSOV) being built for Olympic has entered the outfitting phase.The newbuild was towed from the Crist hull yard in Poland, arriving on Wednesday at Ulstein Verft in Norway where the outfitting phase will now begin. The vessel was towed into the dock hall where the paint work will be performed. Commissioning and testing will take place in the project's concluding months.In 2022, Olympic and Ulstein signed a contract on ship design and construction of two CSOVs of the ULSTEIN SX222 design from Ulstein Design & Solutions AS.

MAN and ABB Partner on Dual-fuel Electric Propulsion
