Great Lakes Iron Ore Trade Up in November
Frequent weather delays hampered the iron ore trade on the Great Lakes in November, according to the Lake Carriers’ Association (LCA), who said shipments totaled 5.7 million tons, an increase of just 60,000 tons compared to a year ago. Loadings did fare better when compared to the month’s five-year average, increasing by 260,000 tons, or 4.8 percent. Shipments from U.S. ports totaled 5.2 million tons in November, again a small increase, 2.2 percent.
BSEE, USCG Investigating GoM Rig Fatality
The Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE) and U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) are investigating the fatality of a worker on board the Petrobras 10,000 drillship in the Gulf of Mexico. Petrobras America Inc. reported the fatality on board the Transocean Ltd. owned drillship at about 4:45 a.m., December 2, 2017. The rig was in an area of the Gulf known as Walker Ridge 469, about 172 miles south of Port Fourchon, La. The deceased worked for Spencer Ogden Ltd.
Ports Seeking Tech to Cut Vessels' Emissions at Berth
Having already invested nearly $400 million in dockside power hookups and other infrastructure to facilitate shore power in order to curtail at-berth air pollution from containerships, the Port of Long Beach and Port of Los Angeles are now soliciting proposals for new technology to reduce emissions for non-container vessels, such as tankers, vehicle carriers, bulk and general cargo ships. Crowley’s Newest LNG-fueled ConRo Ship Launched
VT Halter Marine has launched the second of Crowley Maritime Corp.’s new Commitment Class ships, Taíno, one of the world’s first combination container/roll on-roll off (ConRo) vessels powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG). Taíno will now proceed through the final topside construction and testing phase at the shipyard in Pascagoula, Miss., before beginning service in the U.S. Jones Act trade in 2018.
Wreckage of USS Ward Found in the Philippines
The U.S. Navy warship that famously fired the first American shot in World War II has been found resting on the seabed in Ormoc Bay near Ponson Island in the Philippines. The historic vessel USS Ward was discovered and documented by Microsoft co-founder and philanthropist Paul G. Allen's expedition crew aboard Research Vessel (R/V) Petrel, who has now released video images just prior to the anniversary of the December 7, 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor. At 6:45 a.m.
COSCO Places Large Lubricants Order with Shell
Shell Marine said it has been awarded China Ocean Shipping (Group) Company’s (COSCO SHIPPING) largest marine lubricants order in 2017. This order will include the full range of marine lubricants and technical services for seven out of COSCO SHIPPING’S 10 new generation Ultra Large Container Carriers (ULCCs) with capacities of approximately 20,000 TEUs each, ordered in 2015 and due to be in service from 2018-2019.
