Wärtsilä will start servicing and selling large Volvo Penta engines for commercial shipping applications, initially in selected markets and later globally. Volvo Penta has broadened its engine range to cover commercial vessels and the company now offers engines for increasingly large vessels for both main engine and auxiliary engine duties. The largest engines have outputs of 2,000 horsepower (1,470 kW). Wärtsilä marine engines are considerably larger than these, the largest having outputs of 108,920 horsepower (80,080 kW) . Wärtsilä is the world's leading supplier of ship power and propulsion systems. The respective product ranges of the two companies complement each other very well. "Including the large Volvo Penta marine engines in our product and service offering marks a significant step for Wärtsilä. In the past two years Wärtsilä has expanded its Service business with the acquisition of several companies for its Ciserv group. This cooperation agreement with Volvo Penta is an important addition to the Total Service Provider concept," commented Tage Blomberg, Group Vice President, Service Division. "The cooperation strengthens Volvo Penta's position very significantly as an engine supplier within commercial shipping," says Göran Gummeson, responsible for Volvo Penta's marine engines. "Wärtsilä has a worldwide reputation in the industry, in terms of products as well as service, and we believe that through this agreement we can strengthen both companies' total customer offering." Volvo Penta's engine deliveries to Wärtsilä will comprise mainly the engines in the output range of 300 to 2,000 horsepower (220 to 1,470 kW). The cooperation covers only Volvo Penta engines designed for the commercial marine market.
