ClassNK Issues New Rules for Inland Waterway Ships

Maritime Activity Reports, Inc.

September 18, 2014

Leading classification society ClassNK has released new technical rules and guidance for the survey and construction of inland waterway ships.

As a result of ClassNK’s recent expansion of its global activities, in particular across South America, the number of inland waterway ships on the ClassNK register has continued to grow, accounting for 15% of all vessels classed over the past year alone.

In order to support this growing market and ensure the safety of the inland waterway fleet, ClassNK developed new Rules and Guidance for the Survey and Construction of Inland Waterway Ships to specify new requirements for the survey and construction of ships that navigate inland waterways, such as barges, tugs, and pushers.

The requirements come into effect as of 17 September 2014, requiring all inland waterway ships registered with ClassNK to dhere to the new rules and guidance.

The Rules and Guidance for the Survey and Construction of Inland Waterway Ships are available free of charge via ClassNK’s website www.classnk.com for those who have registered for the ClassNK “My Page” service.
