Verifavia Certifies We4Sea for EU-MRV Emission Monitoring

October 17, 2018

Maritime technology company We4Sea is now officially certified by Verifavia for both IMO-DCS as EU-MRV emission monitoring, stated a press release.

We4Sea developed a world’s first non-Capex fuel monitoring solution, to optimize the performance ánd reduce fuel consumption and emissions of seagoing ships. We4Sea collects vast amounts of operational data of a ship, such as position, draft, speed and heading. This data is sent to shore, where it is enriched with other data sources, such as weather conditions, wave heights, currents and wind.

The proprietary Digital Twin technology of We4Sea transform this big data pool into actionable management information on how to optimize the use and configuration of a ship. In pilot projects, We4Sea has proven that using data analysis can substantially cut fuel costs, up to 20%.

We4Sea recently launched an updated software module, in response to the mandatory CO2 emission monitoring regulations for ships, also known as EU- MRV and IMO-DCS. These two regulations require all ships larger than 5000 Gross Tonnage to monitor, register and verify their CO2 emissions.

EU-MRV is applicable for ships sailing in European waters, IMO DCS for all ships as of January 2019. As both systems run in parallel, and have different reporting format and calculation methods, it creates a need for smart bookkeeping of emissions.

We4Sea’s Emission reporting module has been intensively reviewed by Verifavia’s experts against the requirements of the EU MRV Regulation (2015/757) , MARPOL Annex VI, Chapter 4, Regulation 22 and Regulation 22.A, Resolution MECP.282(70) 2016 and Resolution MECP.291(71) 2017. This in terms of process and functionality and found to be fully compliant.

Using We4Sea’s software, all required data is easily captured within standard vessel forms as part of the normal workflow for arrival, departure, and noon reporting. The collected data instantly feeds standardized reporting templates that can be submitted for verification at the end of the monitoring period. In addition, We4Sea clients can continuously monitor their fuel consumption and CO2 emissions in real-time via an on-line dashboard.

Dan Veen, CEO of We4Sea said: “We are very happy to be officially certified by Verifavia. We4Sea now offers the maritime industry a full range of digital services, focussed on sustainable shipping and managing and reducing of CO2 emissions. For the cost equivalence of two cups of coffee a day, we make compliancy easy for our customers”.

Michiel Katgert, CTO of We4Sea added: “Monitoring and reporting is the first step in improving fuel-efficiency. Our emission monitoring module can easily be extended with additional modules, which help the ship-owner tools to cut his fuel bill substantially. This will not only have a direct impact on their financial results, but it will also improve the sustainability of their operations and lead to a reduction of CO2.”
