Caribbean Maritime Institute (CMI) www.cmi.edu.jm, (located on the Polisadoes peninsula) has selected Transas to supply new marine simulation systems for their training center. As a result of this simulator upgrade project endorsed for financing by the European Community, the CMI will receive the most technically advanced training facility in the Caribbean region. This will be the first full mission simulator complex installed by Transas in this area. According to the contract, Transas will deliver a Navi-Trainer Professional 4000 navigational bridge simulator with 7 visualization channels with the potential to expand that number to 9 channels; ERS 3000 Engine Room simulator; LCH simulator and TGS 4100 GMDSS simulator. Following the request of CMI, Transas is specially developing new visual scenes for six Jamaican ports to complete the sailing area database available with the simulator. CMI’s Executive Director, LCdr. Michael Rodriguez, commenting on the choice of Transas systems, said: “Transas offers the best current solution for the CMI. Their proposal complied and exceeded several areas of our specification. Worthy of note also is that Transas is a direct supplier of the equipment and software being offered. This arrangement also influenced our preference for the Transas System”. The CMI was established as a joint project between the Jamaican and Norwegian Governments in 1980. For more than twenty years, the institute has enjoined the reputation as the ‘tertiary center of excellence’ in the English speaking Caribbean. CMI specializes in maritime education and training for professional seafarers and allied industries personnel. The new simulator facility will be used to provide expanded courses for mariners in accordance with the regulations of the STCW ’95 Convention, including training programs for GMDSS, LCHS, Apprentice Pilot and others. The new facility will be officially opened in September 2003.
