Dokuz Eylul University Maritime Faculty, Turkey has conducted a study to develop a new "East Mediterranean Container Terminal" in Mersin International Port (MIP) using Transas Simulation solutions.

Yapı Proje Uygulama (YPU) that manage construction project of new container terminal chose the Dokuz Eylul University Maritime Faculty for this project after a comprehensive market research. Vice President of YPU Mr. Ali Ihsan GUNER stated: "Dokuz Eylul University Maritime Faculty has the most advanced simulation system and the most experienced academic staff for Port Design and Planning in Turkey".

The study was commenced by developing an initial plan for the new container terminal using the Transas Model Wizard (MW), a state-of-the art software for creating and editing simulation areas. After testing each scenario, the required changes to the plan were determined taking the experience of the harbour pilots and International rules into consideration. During the maneuvering studies, numerous ship maneuvers were performed using different ship models in five different revision plans.

The "Project for Developing a New Container Terminal in Mersin International Port" was held under the supervision of Asst. Prof. Dr. Selcuk NAS.  Asst. Prof. Dr. Yusuf ZORBA participated in this project as a project member. During this study, modeling team and authorized harbour pilots assessed approaching channel depth/width, ship maneuvering basin, turning circle, stopping distance, and necessary bollard pull of tug boats for the new container terminal of MIP. Marine Operation Director of MIP Mr. Ergun NUROGLU, Port Infrastructure Manager Mr Iskender DINLER and General Director of MIP Mr John PHILLIPS,  supervised simulation scenarios.

Asst. Prof. Dr. Selçuk NAS commented on the project results: "Project was completed successfully within short period of time with continuous professional support from Transas and the supreme functions of Model Wizard database editor and navigational simulator NTPRO 5000. As a result of the study, the ideal container terminal plan was designed that will contribute to the safety of vessel maneuvering in the Mersin International Port".
