Transas Celebrates Tenth Anniversary

Maritime Activity Reports, Inc.

March 27, 2002

In March 2002, Transas celebrated its tenth anniversary in the international marine market. Two years after the foundation of the company’s first office in its place of origin, which is St. Petersburg, Russia, Transas Marine Limited was registered in Southampton, U.K., in March 1992, with the purpose to establish international commercial operation. Alexander Koukharenko, managing director of Transas Marine and one of its founders, explains some of the reasons of the company’s tremendous growth: “Even with all the enthusiasm raised by our first successes in Russia, where we established ourselves as a firm market leader in the field of marine software and electronics within a very short period of time, we could hardly imagine, some ten years ago, what great global recognition our products and technologies would find throughout the maritime world. Now, I can confirm that our original idea of developing advanced maritime software functionality to be used as much as possible on standard PC-hardware, has proved to be the only true and most logical approach, which now dominates the international marine market. This correct strategic step made at the very beginning of our business has given Transas the advantage of becoming the technology leader in our niche markets.” Today, Transas’ business activities are concentrated in four major fields that include onboard navigation and control systems, maritime training simulators, shore-based solutions such as VTS (Vessel Traffic Service) and AIS, and, more recently, ship and fleet management systems incorporating marine communication. All Transas products are based on the company’s proprietary vector electronic cartography in TX-97 format, which opens far-reaching opportunities for inter-system integration to provide more complex solutions for Transas customers.
