Miami Port Temporarily Shuts Down

Maritime Activity Reports, Inc.

August 9, 2002

According to reports, the Port of Miami temporarily shut down and was partially evacuated Thursday after an artillery shell and a small missile were discovered in a shipping container. The port was reopened after a police bomb squad determined the once-dangerous armament - a spent 155 mm artillery shell and part of an exploded test missile - had been converted into flower pots. Customs officials called in the Miami-Dade County bomb squad when they found the devices during a routine inspection of an Israeli cargo ship that was carrying the personal belongings of people who were moving from Israel to the Bahamas, CNN reported. The port was closed briefly and the port's public access terminal was evacuated as part of emergency response program implemented by the Miami-Dade Police.
