Project Aims at Emissions Reduction Technology

Maritime Activity Reports, Inc.

January 31, 2003

Aiming at the development of Ultra Low Emissions Marine Engines, Wärtsilä Corporation and MAN B&W Diesel have been encouraged to participate as principal forces in a large scale R&D integrated project under the auspices of the European Union (EU) to address the global problem of CO2 and pollutant emissions. The project will be proposed to be partly funded within the EU Framework Program 6 and is expected to start in 2004. The two companies lead a select consortium with a large number of participating organizations (manufacturers, suppliers, operators, scientific institutions) in the cutting edge of industrial R&D, demonstrating the potential of European Research and International Cooperation in solving global environmental problems. The project setup ensures that the commercial competition between the two groups of companies, including their respective licensees, remains unaffected. The project co-coordinator is professor N. Kyrtatos from National Technical University of Athens (NTUA).
