Sustainable Carrier Transicold PrimeLINE Units
The PrimeLINE unit from Carrier Transicold has achieved a new distinction in sustainability, becoming the first container refrigeration system with a UL Environment validation for recyclability.
As validated by UL Environment using its Environmental Claims Validation Procedure 2789, the PrimeLINE unit is 93 percent recyclable. Carrier Transicold helps improve global transport and shipping temperature control with a complete line of equipment for refrigerated trucks, trailers and containers, and is a part of UTC Climate, Controls & Security, a unit of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX).
“Just as energy efficiency is important to our customers seeking the most sustainable container refrigeration solutions, so too is the recyclability of the units when they reach the end of their service life,” said David Appel, president, Carrier Transicold.
“The UL Environment validation assures that the PrimeLINE unit leads in recyclability, while maintaining its reputation for industry-leading performance and efficiency.”
PrimeLINE units are made almost entirely of recyclable materials, which consist of primarily metals and some plastics. Carrier Transicold closely monitors new parts or processes introduced to ensure they maintain or improve the recyclability rate of the PrimeLINE unit. The PrimeLINE unit can be found listed within UL Environment’s Sustainable Product Database, an online resource for specifiers and purchasers. UL Environment is part of UL (Underwriters Laboratories), a global safety science company.
"In a world of finite natural resources, the PrimeLINE unit stands out as a leader in energy-efficient marine container systems and now the only system certified for recyclability. This is how Carrier maximizes environmental technologies while lowering UL Validates Recyclability of PrimeLINE Units – 2 environmental impact," said John Mandyck, chief sustainability officer, UTC Climate, Controls & Security.
Introduced to the market four years ago, there are more than 100,000 PrimeLINE units in service globally. With its efficient digital scroll compressor, the PrimeLINE unit is designed to significantly reduce on-board power generation requirements, helping shipping lines save fuel used in the generation of electricity. This, in turn, helps hold down operating costs and reduce emissions related to power generation. The PrimeLINE unit reduces carbon emissions by 28 percent compared to previous units.
As fuel is the leading component of ownership cost over the life of a unit, energy efficiency helps to keep the total cost of ownership low.
The PrimeLINE unit also offers best-in-class pulldown among container refrigeration units, as well as best deep-frozen capability among those that use nonozone-depleting R-134a. No other container refrigeration unit provides dehumidification capability lower than the PrimeLINE unit, and none can achieve 50 percent relative humidity as efficiently.
